Art Therapy Internship

20-hour and 40-hour internships are available for art therapy and
psychology students in offline and online modes. The program aims to
equip students with the skills to apply art therapeutically across diverse
settings and populations, preparing them for careers in the field.

This is a 20-hour internship program with both online and offline mode of learning. The core objective is to prepare students for a career that uses the therapeutic application of art in a variety of settings and with a wide range of population.

AGENDA

​

Week 1: Client Interaction in Art therapy

Goal: Understand the foundational principles of art therapy and ethical considerations in practice.
Activities:

  • Intake form

  • Therapist’s Role: Observer, Facilitator, Guide

  • Case notes and reflections Ethical considerations

  • Client Assessment in Art Therapy

  • Supervision 

 

Week 2: Building Counselling skills as a therapist

Goal: To develop core counselling skills for building a strong therapeutic presence.

Activities:

  • Active listening and reflective responses

  • Effective questioning techniques (open-ended, exploratory)

  • Managing silence and nonverbal communication

  • Developing empathy and attunement

  • Recognizing transference and countertransference

  • Cultivating self-awareness and emotional regulation

  • Setting healthy professional boundaries

 

Week 3:  Art therapy for children and adolescents 

Theory: 

  • Child Development & Artistic Expression

  • Identity Formation & Self-Expression

  • Social & Relational Aspects of Art Therapy

  • Emotional & Mental Health Challenges Case studies :  Anger, Self Worth Activities

  • Designing Practical Assignments using Art Directives 

  • Feeling faces drawing for emotional identification

  • Storytelling through sequential art (comic strips)

  • Mural making

  • Identity mask-making (inner vs. outer self)

  • Graffiti & Street Art

 

Week 4: Art Therapy for Adults with Mental Health Challenges

Theory : 

  • Mood & Anxiety Disorders

  • Art Therapy & Psychotic Disorders

  • Art Therapy & Personality Disorders

  • Art Therapy & Neurodevelopmental & Cognitive Disorders

  • Case Study: Adult with Depression, Body image

Practical Assignments:

  • Bilateral drawing for grounding and emotional balance

  • Memory collage (using photos, magazine cutouts)

  • "Tree of Strength" collage, self-portrait in different

  • Body tracing with affirmations, food journal collage

  • self-care mandala

 

Week 5: Trauma-informed art therapy 

Theory: 

  • Understanding trauma: Acute, chronic, complex trauma

  • The impact of trauma on the brain (limbic system, prefrontal cortex, amygdala)

  • Safety, trust, and empowerment as core principles

  • Polyvagal Theory (Regulation of the nervous system)

  • Attachment Theory (Early relational trauma & self-perception)

  • Window of Tolerance (Helping clients regulate emotions through art)

Case Studies: Working with survivors of abuse, violence 

Practical Assignments:

  • Safe space creation (therapeutic box or vision board)

  • Scribble technique for emotional release

  • Create a layered artwork showing different emotional states (overwhelmed, balanced, shut down).

  • Rip paper to express emotional pain, then collage the pieces into a new, integrated image.

  • Use clay, fabric, or textured materials to create a grounding tactile experience

 

Week 6:   Understanding Group-Based Art Therapy 

Goal: Develop an understanding of group therapy structures and art-based interventions.

Activities:

  • Lecture & discussion on different group therapy formats:

  • Brainstorming session: Identifying themes and goals for different populations (children, teens, adults, seniors)

  • Step-by-step guide to designing an art therapy session plan:

  • Theme (e.g., stress relief, self-reflection, empowerment)

  • Objective (What emotional/psychological needs does it address?)

  • Materials required

  • Step-by-step facilitation instructions

  • Discussion prompts & reflection questions

  • Certificate of completion 

  • Course material in pdf format

 

Duration:  20 hours (Includes  In person and/or online sessions  and practical assignments to be done in own time and during class time)

 

Time: Flexible 

 

Cost: Rs 6000 : Individual; Group Discount @50% for batch of 2 or more
